The Smartsheet MCP Server provides a secure and reusable way for AI assistants, agents, and automation workflows to work with Smartsheet through Workato. It exposes nine coordinated MCP tools that support workspace discovery, asset search, workspace and folder navigation, sheet-column retrieval, row-level search, and controlled row creation, update, and deletion.

The solution is intended for PMO teams, project delivery groups, business operations, integration specialists, and automation teams that rely on Smartsheet for day-to-day work management. Instead of requiring users to manually locate workspace IDs, folder IDs, sheet IDs, row IDs, and column IDs, the server can discover and resolve these identifiers through connected tool flows. A user may begin with only a sheet or folder name, and the MCP client can locate the correct asset, retrieve the required metadata, identify the target row, and perform an approved action using the resolved identifiers.

Workato serves as the orchestration and governance layer for the solution. It manages the Smartsheet connection, exposes the MCP tools, validates inputs, coordinates multi-step operations, transforms responses, handles errors, and sends operational email notifications when failures occur. Smartsheet remains the authoritative system of record throughout the process.

By standardizing common Smartsheet operations, the server reduces manual effort, limits custom integration development, improves consistency, and creates a governed foundation for extending AI-assisted project and work-management use cases.
